Wheatley Memorial
Institute of Information Sciences was created in 1974 as a
not-for-profit corporation under section 501 (C) (3) of the 1954 Internal Revenue Code.
The Institute is an electronic library engaging in the necessary research to acquire,
classify, store, retrieve, disseminate and utilize information by man-machine systems and
networks. So much for the legaleze. For over three decades, Wheatley has been
involved in the improvement of the understanding and use of computer
systems as tools in making the right information available to the right people at the
right time.

WMI supports many projects some of
which we have described below:
Owning your own business is the American way.
That is how America got started when we were still a British colony.
But starting your own business with all the added government
regulations and hidden speed bumps is much more difficult than it
used to be. Yet the ability to start your own business is more
important now than ever before. We created the New Business Tutor and
have helped many veterans successfully start and operate their own businesses.
(NOTE:
We will need the dates of active duty, branch of service
and military occupational specialty. This offer
is available to U.S. MILITARY VETERANS ONLY!)

Originated in 1976 by a private
grant, this project has required research, by
Wheatley assisted by many local and state government
agencies, chambers of commerce, visitors' bureaus and other community-oriented organizations in the two
Carolinas. The results of this research, sifted and formed into manageable segments of
information was originally published in a free, seasonal, printed hand-out,
Carolina Now, for the
benefit of tourists and prospective residents to encourage them to visit
communities in the Carolinas. In 1997 publication was moved to the World
Wide Web of the Internet.

(oriented to tourism)
North and South Carolina have so much to offer, not only to our citizens
but to our visitors and potential residents, individual and corporate. While we consider
tourism as one of our major industries, those of us who did not initially come to Carolina
as 'visitors' are descended from visitors of previous generations. And it is gratifying to
be good hosts and watch our guests leave happy, fulfilled, and grateful for the
hospitality they received in Carolina, perhaps to return someday as residents.

The following projects were created and are
maintained to supplement Institute funding:
|
Originated in 1999 through a
contractual agreement with one of the foremost reservations engines on the
World Wide Web, the Institute has commenced the construction of a database
locating accommodations throughout the world to enable tourists and other visitors
to locate and reserve appropriate accommoda-tions
quickly and easily. A network of web sites presents this information in
different ways to be of maximum assistance to the wide variety of needs.

Originated in 1999 by a
private grant, this project is formatted to utilize information from the
CarolinaNow project to present (to the traveling public) Interstate
Highway exit locations and particulars, available lodging, etc. We started
with the Interstate Highways in North and South Carolina,
expanded it to cover the central and south Atlantic Coast
states, then adding California and Nevada
and, finally, the entire U.S.A.
